1. Aesthetics
Comments are easier to read when they're in their own box, somewhat contrasting the rest of the page. So I think. I decided this from looking at David Walsh's site.
2. Gravatars
Images spruce things up, including images. I thought about assigning random images for comments. Then, I discovered Gravatars when I was looking at the comment section of The Exploding Barrel. If you go to the Gravatar website and register email addresses, then your avatar will appear on websites that support Gravatars whenever you use that registered email.
I tried to find some list of site that support Gravatars, but I couldn't. The three sites that I frequent which support them are:
The Exploding Barrel
Lamentations on Chemistry
Will and Beyond
That last one's a real winner.
3. Nested replies
Comments often turn into discussions. It's possible to have a discussion in comments without nesting, but it's harder to read. On the other hand, I think nesting too deep also gets out of hand, so I just allow one level of nesting.
