Atlantic City Trip

will posted 08/10/08 @ 1:56PM EST

I went to Atlantic City this weekend. Got up at 5:45am, because the bus left at 7:15; too early. As a result, I found that the DC subways aren't open at 6:30am on weekends, so I had to take a cab. I'm still getting used to the transition from NYC to DC in some ways. Had dramamine and slept most of the way, but didn't get to AC until 12:15, which is way too long of a bus ride.

Yan, Shashi, and I played in a poker tournament at Bally's; $60 buy-in + $15 registration fee. Started with $10,000 in chips. Blinds started at 25/50. The blinds were at 200/400, and it was seconds from a 15 minute break. I called with J5 offsuit, because what the hell, wasn't going to get to call for that cheap any longer. Got two pair on the flop, but the woman to my right got trips. After some raising and re-raising we were all-in, and that was it for me. Shashi and Yan were both still in after the break; Shashi got out first, then Yan. Nobody ended up in the money, but I had fun.

Spent about $4 on slot machines killing time with Dianna and Adam. We walked around, then watched Dianna play some $10 Blackjack. There was only one spot at the table, and the whole time we waited, nobody ever got up. Once they were back from the poker tourney, we went to eat. We were going to go to the Hilton, for a $9.99 buffet, but the line was super long, and my vote to stay was outvoted.

We went to the Tropicana's Fiesta Buffet. Here's my review:
It cost ~$26, which is high, but about average for dinner at a casino buffet. The food quality was hit or miss. Well, not hit or miss, more like mediocre or miss. As long as you chose the right stuff (fried shrimp, cordon bleu) and avoid the crap (sirloin, mashed potatoes), it was okay. The selection however sucked, it was one of the smallest buffets that I've seen.

Afterwards we played some minigolf. Yan, Shashi, and I made a sidebet; $5 to the winner (of the three of us). Easiest $10 I've ever earned; I'm quite the beast at minigolf. I believe Adam beat me by a stroke, but he didn't get in on the action thankfully. The course was okay, had some cool statues, but there wasn't much for obstacles; it was a pretty easy course.

One day I'd like to go there and go to the beach. I'd have to go there for a few days, which would be much better to spread the 10 hour bus drive over the course of two days. Dianna and Adam both got free hotel rooms for playing for an hour at the roulette table, but they're only for September-March, so that doesn't really help for the beach.

Lost money, but not exorbitant amounts, so I'm okay. Was a good time. Didn't get back to DC until 2:15am; my 9:30pm bus didn't leave until 10:15pm, sigh.

Godspeed.
