False Security Attached

will posted 09/18/08 @ 3:57PM EST

I was notified via the Gmail blog that they are now going to notify you if you forget to attach a file. This will avoid such embarrassing mishaps as forgetting to attach your resume, referring to files that aren't there, etc.

How well does it work? Not well. I looked into it, to see if other places mentioned this. They give a list of about 50 places that link to their post, and it seems that only 3 of those have actually tested this: Lifehacker, CSC-SY, and TechnoTraits.

Here is my test below. If it's highlighted in red, I was not prompted, and green means I was.

Uploaded file

Great idea, but needs some work. As it is now, this will just give people a sense of false security, and more people will forget to attach files. Beware, you must enable this in 'Labs' in the Gmail settings.

Please see attached file.
Not there? Gmail didn't prompt?!?
Curse my dependence!

Godspeed.
