Wii 2, PS4 and the Xbox 720

New video game consoles have a trend of coming out about every five years. For Nintendo, the NES came out in 1985, the SNES in 1991, the N64 in 1996, the Gamecube in 2001, and the Wii in 2006. For Sony, the Playstation came out in 1995, the PS2 in 2000, and the PS3 in 2006. For Microsoft, the Xbox released in 2001 and the Xbox 360 released in 2005.

Judging by that pattern shouldn't we see a new gaming system coming out around 2010 or 2011? Well... yeah!

CNET has posted a rumor that the a new Nintendo Wii will be coming out in 2011. The system will still stay true to the Wii's focus on innovation but the system will contain better HD capabilities and possibly more digitally distributed content.

Sony has already admitted to working on a PS4, 5, and even 6, and one site even thought that the PS4 would be released in 2008! A PS4 is definitely in the works but, obviously the prediction on the release date was wrong. Unless, of course, Sony plans to release a new system secretly. <.<-->.>

Microsoft has also publicly admitted that they plan to release an Xbox 720 somewhere around 2011 or 2012. The article mentions that Microsoft is currently trying to predict what kinds of CPUs will available in the market by then and how they can utilize those for gaming purposes.

I spotted the Nintendo article first randomly and my initial thought was... why? The system is selling so well right now and there is seemingly no point in releasing a new system. However, judging by the timeline, 2011 sounds about right. Three years from now, people will probably own all of the systems they want from this generation. Heck, I know I'm not buying another system (sorry Xbox).

So don't be surprised if you hear information about a new gaming console at next year's E3 or even the Tokyo Game Show that's coming up in the next couple days. And if you're still on the fence about buying a new gaming console after hearing about all the great games that are coming out soon, then you should probably wait a couple years. An investment in a video game system next year will be outdated within two years after your purchase, assuming history repeats itself.

New gaming consoles
Coming to you very soon
Five years is too short

ok, I'm sorry that I have to do this.

ARGH! Third gen systems in my opinion only really found their footing this year and the ps3 might not even be that far yet considering no one has taken full advantage of its capabilities yet. they have no buisness developing new systems yet! game development people! have we forgotton completely about the GAMES instead of your big shiny christmas cash crops that do nothing but sit there for the first year. Where are my innovative games fuckwads!

Well, I agree with Richard, I'm also done buying systems this generation (sorry Sony). If these generations lasted closer to 8 years, I'd be much more likely to buy.

On the other hand, I don't buy a console 'til there's a price drop (I made an exception for the Wii), because I'm too cheap. So the generation could last longer if I wanted to pay for it, but I don't, so oh well.

Lima, I agree in terms of the Wii/PS3, but I'd say the 360 had its footing in before this year. Nevertheless, game development should definitely get more focus than console development. But, that's just how it works, Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft's focus is going to be on the hardware, it's what they do.
