Links Jumble: Norwegian Holy War on the Cliffs

will posted 11/18/08 @ 12:02AM EST

Adam Brockbank: From Design You Trust: "Adam Brockbank has created concept art and storyboards for blockbuster moveis, such as Harry Potter, Spiderman, Alexander, Tomb Rider, X-Men." Very nice work.

Don't Date T-Rex: In case the situation ever comes up, you should opt out of dating a Tyrannosaurus Rex.  Not convinced? Here are 9 (illustrated) reasons why you shouldn't.  Speaking of entertaining bits about dinosaurs, check this out.

Uploaded file

Highly Precarious Cliff Homes: I can't imagine why people would have such a death wish as to live in these houses, other than to say flip god[1] the finger.

Strange Theme Restaurants: My favorites on the list are eating the death body, and the pitch black one.  Going to the bathroom must be really awkward.

Lance Armstrong, Environment Destroyer: Well, not really destroyer, but his house (read: mansion) seems to be using 38 times as much water as the average home.  During a drought. And he only noticed when he was in Colorado and his bills were higher than normal[2]. On the other hand, he only has one nut, so he should really get away with whatever he wants to.

Uploaded file

Holy War: Which side are you on?  I've always been an arrows guy, but I definitely see how it's easier to use the mouse when you play with ASDW. I don't really computer game much, so it doesn't matter for me.

Bono Leaks U2 Tracks: This is entertaining because U2 is anti-file sharing, and the tracks were leaked because Bono played them too loud, and someone outside his house recorded them.  Brilliant.

Uploaded file

Mysterious Nights: Pictures like these really want to make me go camping in Norway.  I'd like to go camping in general, I haven't done that in a long time.  Anyhow, Scandinavia has always seemed like a cool place to visit and/or live.

[1]: I refuse to capitalize god.
[2]: Why is he checking and paying his own bills?  Shouldn't someone else be in charge of that?
(I blame CBC for the use of footnotes.)

These are easy posts
Cause I've already read them
All that's left: sharing

Links Jumble: Election Edition

will posted 11/07/08 @ 11:53AM EST

Saw: November: Hahaha; kinda scary. Here's a related, and less scary image.

Election Maps: These start out really basic, by state. Then the states are skewed by population. Next is to break the states down into counties, then do another population skew (that's the one you see below). It's taken another step and going beyond red/blue, since some counties are more mixed than others. Good stuff.

Uploaded file

Sarah Palin Porn: I first saw this here on Design You Trust, then discovered it was from the movie. I haven't seen it (...yet?) but it looks entertaining. Along the same lines...

Obama Grabs Headlines: More than 700 newspaper front pages on November 5th, once the election was called. Crazy stuff.

C-C-C-Combo Breaker: The pictures are actually really well done. If you don't get the reference, here's Urban Dictionary.

Uploaded file

The Onion: Nation's Worst Job: I do love the Onion so. "African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America." Read the whole article, it's short and entertaining.

Sinfest: I was torn between showing the comic pictured, or this one, but the first one's smaller. Sinfest had some pretty entertaining political comics this election season.

Uploaded file

Measuring an Internet Election: The Wall Street Journal has an interesting piece on measuring the presidential candidates online presence (official website, YouTube views, Facebook friend, blog mentions) as well as poll results. Shows a real difference between McCain/Obama's base.

Election season
Has come and gone. I'll miss it,
but I'm glad it's done

Links Jumble: Webcomics Edition

will posted 10/13/08 @ 12:18AM EST

I currently read 30 different webcomics. Sometimes, I will bookmark a comic which stands out to me, if I remember to. Today I'll highlight a few of those. These are by no means a best of, but rather just a good selection.

A Softer World: The Fog: If you could only take three things to a desert island, what would they be? I will have to use this answer from now on if ever asked that question.

I Can't Draw Feet: Transformers: I never saw the Transformers movie, but I have seen real-life Transformers.

Uploaded file

Applegeeks Light: Disaster Movies: One of the most terrifying disaster movies of all time...

Anomaly: Mustaches: Hmm, I don't remember having these urges on Cinco de Mustache, but they wouldn't have surprised me.

Digital Unrest: Truth in Numbers: I wish the sort of talk you heard in your headset while playing FPS games online was anywhere near this intelligent.

Uploaded file

Sinfest: Jesus Terminator: Sinfest is great stuff. So is Terminator. (At least 1 and 2, can't speak for 3 or the TV show.) Combining the two is even greater.

xkcd: Exploits of a Mom: I've never seen SQL injection being as humorous as this.

Uploaded file

Three Panel Soul: Geography: I too love the Animaniacs' songs.

Webcomics are great
But I still miss newspapers
A good substitute

Links Jumble: Milk, Broccoli, and Coffee

will posted 09/21/08 @ 11:23PM EST

Kaza Kibuishi: This guy's art is very fantastic. In the good sense of the word, and that it's very fantasy/dream-like.

Uploaded file

Whole Milk as a CT Agent: Normally a dilute solution of barium is drank before having a CT scan, but scientists have found that drinking whole milk has the same effect. Hmm... a poisonous* metal, or milk... tough call.

Solar Cell Leaves: Normally solar cells are fairly unattractive, unless you're really into the industrial look. However, these look really classy.

Uploaded file

Be a Soda Connoisseur: The Art of Manliness has articles like this on a regular basis; good ideas, well-written, and the ideas are pretty off the wall.

5 Reasons to Hate RPGs: I like RPGs, but these are pretty good reasons; especially 1, 2, and 4.

Carl Warner's Foodscapes: I always think of trees when I see broccoli, and after seeing this image, I always will. The rest of the images are cool too, but this is the best one.

Uploaded file

Coffee Drinkers Have Slightly Lower Death Rates: Excellent, another article about coffee. Not only does it taste great, and keep me awake, but it's now keeping me alive longer than you suckers who don't like coffee? Excellent.

First Female DNA Sequenced: 6 years after the Human Genome Project they finally sequence female DNA. I would have thought it would happen sooner, just to prove the theory that they're a different species.

*Barium sulfate isn't toxic because it's not water soluble and just passes through the system however.

Here is a buildup
Clearing out some articles
Enjoy my top picks

Links Jumble: Michael Jackson's Fingerprints

will posted 09/04/08 @ 9:30AM EST

Steve Jobs is Dead?: I would be depressed if I found out that someone had started writing my obituary while I was alive. He has more money than god, so I suppose he'll get over it.

Skip the File Wiping: If you get caught by the MPAA, RIAA, etc. don't erase your hard drive. That's called tampering with evidence, and if you're not good enough to not get caught, you're not good enough to hide that you ever did it. How is this not common sense to people?

Uploaded file

Modern Retro Michael Jackson: What would he look like without all that plastic surgery? Ah, just as we all suspected, like a human being. Maybe he'd be sane too?

Zero Punctuation: Braid: I discussed Zero Punctuation prior. I haven't seen too many of the recent ones, since I don't do a good job keeping up with video games, but as I've played a bunch of Braid, I watched and enjoyed it.

Texan Teachers with Guns: This is one of the dumbest things that I've read in quite a while. Some city in Texas is allowing teachers to have concealed weapons?! I guess this is just reason #725221111989 that I will never live in Texas.

Uploaded file

Fingerprint Art: Classy portraits using your fingerprints as art. The same company produces art based on your DNA. When I can afford it, I want some of this.

Bell Labs shutting down basic science research: Once the forefront of science research, Bell Labs is pulling the plug on basic science. Excimer's right; the MBAs fucked up.

Facebook: The Movie: Yeah, really. Aaron Sorkin (West Wing, Sports Night) is taking a stab at this. I can't really see any way that this would work, but it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Oh so many links

Links Jumble: Artsy Edition

will posted 08/17/08 @ 10:57PM EST

My links jumble posts have 8 featured links, and usually about 3 of them are cool artsy things, but this time, they all will be.

Julia Fullerton: There are a bunch of great shots here; some completely different ideas, all of which are amazing. I think this one below is my favorite, but it's a tough call.

Uploaded file

Spider: The vanishing point effect is pretty well done. Don't forget to click; I didn't notice that part of it the first time I went here.

Rejected Crayons: Another tough decision here, but I think I'm going to have to go with the flu and spouse ones as my favorites.

Pie Slices: I definitely prefer the first slice of pie, what about you?

Klaps: Here's another market IKEA should try and get into. I love IKEA...

Uploaded file

This will make you feel small: The first few were pretty boring I thought, since I already knew all about them, and had seen similar images before, but the last two were really interesting. It could just be the science nerd in me talking.

Coffee Kiss: Be sure to visit the site to see the whole image, this is just a chunk of it. I really wonder how they pulled this off. Hmm... now I want coffee.

Uploaded file

Yar Rassadin: A really stellar shot, and the concept is even better. I want a pair.

Links Jumble: Homewreckers Pop Earth

will posted 08/12/08 @ 5:54PM EST

HillBilly's Homewrecker: This is the name of a hot dog. A monstrous, amazing hot dog that you get prizes for eating quick enough. I've never been to West Virginia, but this is pretty good motivation to do a road trip there.

Uploaded file

Hamlet: Facebook Edition: If you're not familiar with Facebook feeds, this is most likely your first time on the internet, and I'm honored you chose Will and Beyond as one of your first destinations. If you're not familiar with Hamlet, you never went to high school, so congratulations on figuring out how to use the internet all by yourself. Otherwise, you'll find this hilarious.

CERN Fires Up Sept. 10: To say that this machine has the potential to discover amazing things is an understatement. The discovery of the Higgs boson would be huge. Seven trillion electron volts of energy? Excuse me, I have to change my pants.

Pop vs. Soda: Odds are very good that you've had this debate if you've ever interacted with a few people who don't come from the same part of the country as you. This project shows us which areas are more prone to naming that fizzy beverage one way or the other.

Uploaded file

The CERN Rap: There are few in this world geekier than us scientists, and when we show off our science in entertaining ways like this, amazingness ensues.

Barack-Rolling: Is the novelty of being Rickrolled wearing off? Tired of sending links to that same video? Wanna spice it up a bit, with a dash of Progress?

Levi van Veluw: Great art piece. You should watch the first ten seconds or so of the video to get the idea, but it gets repetitive after that. Then just look at all the pictures.

Uploaded file

Hamster Stuck in a Video Game: In middle school, I did a science experiment where I led my cats/dogs through a giant cardboard maze, and recorded their times. While that was more scientific, this video is more spectacular.

will posted 08/04/08 @ 12:00PM EST

Modern Science: Very well done, if anyone knows who created this, let me know so I can give credit; I very much approve.

Uploaded file

Cursor.swf: Pretty entertaining. If you don't get it, put your mouse over it.

2 Girls, 1 Cup: Film Review: If you don't understand, I'm not mean enough to explain it to you, and I'm certainly not linking to the video. Found via BoingBoing. It's most likely fake, but funny nonetheless.

Seinfeld Wars: Funny, be sure and click on the link to see the full picture.

Uploaded file

Wikipedia: Mill: There was once a coin that was worth a tenth of a penny, did anyone else know this? Imagine if I went to a gas station and paid for a gallon of a gas with change and then nine of these.

How I Hacked Digg: Interesting story; nice to see how fast Kevin Rose (the creator of Digg) responded directly via a comment on the article.

The Purest Form of Art: It's pretty entertaining that a discussion actually did start in the Flickr comments on the photo. I'd like to see where this is and see if one started there as well.

Uploaded file

Top Ten Amazing Chemical Reactions: The #1 reaction, the oscillating chemical reaction was really cool; I hadn't heard of this, but that's a really interesting idea. I looked into it some, and there's some cool chemistry behind it.

Links Jumble: Moons and Zombies

will posted 07/26/08 @ 1:30PM EST

Moon Adventures: Another excellent post on Design You Trust. These pictures look like they were really fun to take; someday I'll get a nice camera that can take good night pictures.

Uploaded file

Nine Inch Nails Adventure: NIN sent their fans on a hunt for tickets which led them to driving to a remote location at night, climbing a fence, and ending up in drainpipe. That sounds awesome, I wish I was in L.A.

Reducing Wikipedia Vandalism: Wikipedia is considering having moderators approve all edits. I hate the idea, there must be a better way. How about mandatory registration? Will it eliminate vandalism? No, but it will reduce it.

Outlook vs. Gmail: I'm a pretty diehard Gmail fan, but this is was a good read. It's a pretty unbiased comparison of the two email approaches. Worth looking into if you're debating between the two.

Energy Drinks Linked To Risk-taking: I guess I'm too tame then, because I just use energy drinks when I need to pull all-nighters studying for exams, writing papers, etc.

ZombieHarmony: Finally, a dating site for those of us with rotting flesh. The tagline is "...because the apocalypse doesn't need to be lonely." Awesome.

Uploaded file

Makemake: The Newest Plutoid: As sad as losing Pluto is, the term plutoid is a nice homage. Makemake was at one point called 'Easterbunny'; they should have stuck with that.

Inside Looking Out: The Flickr blog does a nice job of highlighting some of the exceptional work on their site. I especially like the washer one.

Zelda Bedding: There is tons of awesome video game crafts out there, this is one of the better ones. If wanting to sleep with Link makes me gay, then so be it.

Uploaded file

Braille Coin: Wow, that's a really great idea. There will be readable braille on a $1 coin. They're just making 400,000 of them, but they're selling for $11, with the extra $10 going to charities benefitting the blind. I'll buy one. I sent myself an email time capsule to remind me.

The Importance of Forgetting: It makes sense; your brain only has so much room, to take in new information you have to clean out the crap.

Macbeth in 96 Seconds: I thought it was funny that the last 15 seconds or so were just filled with bowing and applause. Well done.

Stop: I've seen some of these around; always entertaining.

Uploaded file

Coffee: Good for liver cancer: Studies like this come up all the time, with results which go in both directions (though most actually favor drinking coffee). My coffee drinking habits approve this study though. There are other more awesome chemistry related studies too.

Lettuce Sandwiches: I love lettuce, so I'm going to try this, and if I remember, I'll do a full post about it. I can't think of a way to easily, scientifically gauge my sleep, but oh well, it'll be arbitrary.

Electric Art: I like all three of the shots here, but my favorite is the first one (the one below). The pig has a really euphoric look on his face.

Dmitri Daniloff: These pictures are really good. Very creative, and very well done. Design You Trust is a great website in general; check it out.

Uploaded file

Scientists and The Media: As much as I like mad scientists, it's good that they did a study to show the public that we can act like real people too. Well long enough to convince you to give us funding.

Pricier Gas Means Fewer Deaths: It's even more drastic with teen drivers. I suppose there are upsides to everything.

More Pirate Attacks: It still blows my mind whenever I hear about real, modern pirates. You just think about them in the movies, and assume that they are a thing of the past. But no, they're out there. Automatic weapons are less impressive than swords and pistols however.

Uploaded file

Pandora on the iPhone: I was originally going to put up the announcement from Pandora, but Wired did a really good review of it. If I ever end up getting an iPhone this application will be a major driving force.

Trek Stops: I can't think of a time I've needed something like this, but it's a great idea and I can imagine it would come in handy a lot.

Iran Photoshoppery: Make sure to click on all the links to Little Green Footballs, but this is a great summary post. The fact that a civilian picked this up is crazy. I wonder if he got offered a government job afterwards?

Uploaded file

Ten Pieces of Awesome Gaming Merchandise: The potions and the wallpaper are my favorite, but some of those statues/figures are pretty nice as well.

will posted 06/21/08 @ 1:42PM EST

$200 Burger King Burger: I kind of would want to buy this just to say that I went all the way to London so I could go to Burger King, then spent $200 on a burger.

Uploaded file

Super Genitari: The Ultimate retro gaming mod. There's even ports for all of the original controllers. Too bad there's no virtual boy in there though.

The Moon is Doomed: Okay, well not our moon, but Mars'. It's apparently orbiting too close to Mars and will slowly be destroyed by gravitational forces. Bad times.

Uploaded file

Cop gets a parking ticket: Oh sweet justice. Definitely abuse of power.

Not a Paper Cup: I want one of these, it would really confuse people when they saw me washing it out.

Uploaded file

Google Fraud: You disappoint me Google; I know for a fact your employees actually do play Rock Band at work, why can't you just take real picture?

Seminar Titles We'll Never See: Some of these would be pretty entertaining. And I swear I've seen "Incomprehensible Verbose Pretentious Old Guy Science: Fall Asleep Now." many many times...

Internet Talk in Homework: Man, kids today. If I ever saw this in students' lab reports, they'd get docked.

Links Jumble: Butter, Frogs, and Space Texting

will posted 06/09/08 @ 6:50AM EST

Why You Should Wear Glasses: Pretty compelling reasons. I love marketing like this.

Uploaded file

Artificial Butter is Bad: Not only does it not taste as good as butter, but it's also bad for your lungs (if you're a rat). Maybe if you're a human too.

Are Nanoparticles Dangerous: Ugh, I hate crap like this. Yes, I'm aware the size aspect of nanotechnology could be dangerous, but they should be a hell of a lot more clear when writing stuff like this. They discuss about how nanoparticles could crystallize and initiate kidney stones, yet they don't even say what type of nanoparticle they're talking about. That's important to note! Just because one type of NP crystallizes to cause stones doesn't mean all will. Damn them.

Portable Wooden NES: In the first Techy Tuesday, I showed a couple of cool NES mods, and here's another one; they put a whole NES in a portable wooden system. Awesome. Me want.

Uploaded file

Brain Boosting Drugs in Academia: Wow, this kind of blows my mind. Nature wrote a piece about how scientific research are using brain steroids. It doesn't surprise that it happens, just about how widespread it is. I realize that a couple thousand people isn't a huge sample size, but it's not that small either.

Frogs without Lungs: In Indonesia, they discovered a frog with breathes without having lungs. This is pretty amazing actually, I never really thought it possible. It essentially combines the function of the lungs with the skin. From the page:
"It's an extreme adaptation that was probably brought about by these fast-moving streams," Bickford said, adding that it probably needed to reduce its buoyancy in order to keep from being swept down the mountainous rivers.

Uploaded file

Gay Kissing is Gross: America loses. What's wrong with parents?

Expensive Texting: It's four times cheaper to send your data into space than it is to send it to another cell phone. That makes sense, right? I knew cell companies probably make a fortune with texting, but I had no idea it was this much.

Hawaiian Fire Knifing: I would like to learn how to do this. In addition to looking incredibly awesome, imagine being able to put that on your resume. The name alone is stupendous.

Uploaded file

The Mystery of Chloroform: Really? After over a hundred years of using anesthesia, we still didn't know how chloroform worked? I had no idea either, but I assumed it was known in the scientific/medical community.

Last.fm Sociomap: If you don't know what Last.fm is, I made a post about it a little while ago. This tool lets you put in your username, and makes a cool looking countour map of how close in taste you and your friends music is. The image below is mine.

Uploaded file

Hello Ketene: Chemistry + Cutesy Japanese Stuff = Hilarity.

Goldilocks Sex Study: Sex that goes too quick is bad. Sex that takes too long is bad. Makes sense, but they did an actual study on it.

Make Your Lock Really Secure: Unless of course your thief is a puzzle master. (Though it's a pretty easy puzzle.) Guess what day in April Engadget/ThinkGeek put this up?

Dating Stonehenge: They're doing an archaelogical dig to try and get more precise dates for the history of stonehenge. This started at the beginning of April, and was a 2 week dig. I couldn't find any follow-up to it yet, I suppose they're still analyzing data and such. I originally found this here on Newsvine, but when I was searching for a followup, I found that BBC article that had a cool video to go along with it.

Links Jumble: The Beginning

will posted 05/21/08 @ 9:44AM EST

I get a lot of items in my RSS reader. Roughly 400 or so a day, and a lot of interesting stuff happens out there in the world. Do I have time to write semi-lengthy posts about all of these things? Nope. Do I have time to write brief paragraphs or even just sentences about eight of them at a time? Maybe. That's the idea behind this new section of Will and Beyond.

Chemistry Rap: I've heard a lot of chemistry songs, and this is definitely on the more entertaining side.

The Hindenburg Graph: Haha, using graphs to spell out phrases is always funny. I've seen it done a few times; one that explains rap lyics is one my favorites.

Uploaded file

Classy Insults: Lines such as, "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure", and "They never open their mouths without subtracting from the sum of human knowledge." I wish I had enough class to pull these off.

Energy Drinks Bad: Apparently energy drinks are bad for your teeth. It's no surprise to me that they're bad for you in general, many of them taste like cancer. I wouldn't have thought that they would be any worse for your teeth than soda, but apparently there's not as much buffer in them to protect the enamel.

Creepy Mario: Luckily the Mario Bros. movie wasn't even this creepy. If you browse through the site, there are some other cool pictures. I just added the RSS feed to my reader, so expect more of these later.

Uploaded file

Zip Code Locator: Slowly type in a zip code and you'll see where in America it is. It doesn't sound that great, but try it out, it's quite impressive.

DIY Mustache Wax: I almost had to try this out for Cinco de Mustache, but luckily I found some at CVS. It was mediocre, I might try this out next time I participate. If you browse through the site, there are some awesome staches.

The iPod Bed: Must everything have an iPod dock? Even my bed??? With a pricetag of $20,000, I'll have to pass. It has some other cool features, but I repeat: $20,000.
