Curry Egg Ramen

will posted 08/23/08 @ 8:25PM EST

Time to make some Ramen again, so I browsed through my fridge and saw that I had eggs. After looking through the Official Ramen Homepage, I decided upon Curry Egg Ramen. I didn't have all of the ingredients, but let's give it a try anyway.

Two packets of ramen
Two eggs
Curry power or Curry paste
Scallions
Cashews
Cilantro
Hot sauce (optional)

As you can see, all of the key ingredients are there. Instead of boiling the ramen like normal, the recipe told me to pan fry it in just enough water to cover it, and add butter. Didn't make much sense to me, but I did it anyway.

The recipe called for about 2 tablespoons of curry paste, but I went with more like 4-6. Despite this, the recipe was still nothing special; a little on the bland side. The cashews were a nice touch, but just not enough.

Mexican Chili-Cheese Ramen

will posted 07/21/08 @ 10:01AM EST

After reading about my Oregon Trail Ramen experience, you may have thought to yourself, wow, what a great idea. And it is, don't get me wrong, but it has now been improved upon. I present to you: Mexican Chili-Cheese Ramen!

Uploaded file

The recipe is pretty much the same, except you add in cheese and hot sauce. I made a few tweaks to this while making it, so my recipe is as follows:

2 packs of Ramen
1 can of chili
Shredded mozzarella cheese
Salsa

Cook and drain the ramen. I added in one of the chicken flavored flavor packs, but I don't think the taste was too noticable. Microwave your can of chili and the cheese on top. Mix the chili/cheese together with the ramen, and top with salsa.

The recipe had called for Monterey Jack, which is a good cheese, but I prefer mozzarella. It also said Taco Bell hot sauce or tabasco, but I prefer salsa.

I plan to do quite a few of these recipes, and put them here on Will and Beyond, so I should rate them all. My scale will be from 1-10, where 1 is god-awful, 5 is regular ramen, and 10 is spectacular.

Oregon Trail Ramen

will posted 07/13/08 @ 2:26PM EST

I haven't really had much Ramen since my Sophomore year at NYU when I lived at 26th St. I've recently been on a Ramen kick, so why not try some recipes from The Official Ramen Homepage, and document the experience.

Today's recipe is Oregon Trail Ramen. I can't quite figure out why it's called that; the only relation I found is that the guy who submitted it goes to school in Oregon. I chose this one because of the name, and because I had chili. There were more interesting ones such as Chili Frito Pie Ramen Style, Prison Beef and Chili Ramen, and Mexican Chili-Cheese Ramen, but they all required ingredients I didn't have. Maybe I'll try those in the future.

You start by cooking the Ramen. Two minutes is the standard cooking time for all Ramen. While the Ramen is cooking, microwave your can of chili for 2-3 minutes.

Then you drain it. When I cook Ramen, I normally drain it, then pour the flavor packet over the moist noodles.

Finally, you simply combine the two and mix them together. The recipe didn't mention in adding the flavor packet, so I didn't. The result is what you see below.

This came out pretty good. You can still taste the Ramen, but the chili definitely dominates. The noodles make for good filler. This would definitely be good with some cheese mixed in there, which is what a lot of the recipes I mentioned above include.

I plan to do quite a few of these recipes, and put them here on Will and Beyond, so I should rate them all. My scale will be from 1-10, where 1 is god-awful, 5 is regular ramen, and 10 is spectacular.

Iron Chef College Edition

posted 03/12/08 @ 11:24PM EST

Before I moved off of Roosevelt Island, I had a ton of leftover food. What to do with it? Let's put it all in a pile, then play Iron Chef! We didn't have a "secret ingredient" that you had to use in all of your dishes, the idea was to just get rid of food. Since I was a college student, the food consisted mostly of things like ramen, macaroni and cheese, and soup. Dianna and I both made 4 dishes, then rated each other based on taste and appearance. She ended up winning.

I'm putting together my dessert. It looks.... special, already.

Links Update

Quick update, added Russell's site to the links page. Also on the links page is an AMAZING site, full of recipes that you make with ramen. For people like me with a cupboard full of ramen, it's a nice little addition of variety. I highly recommend the Jammin Ramen. (Jah-men Rah-men)
