Tweeting During Labor

will posted 08/28/08 @ 2:06AM EST

I was getting ready to go to bed when I saw a tweet from @syam saying: Wow! @ginnycase is tweeting her child's birth live!

Uploaded file

He wasn't joking... Earlier, this week, Jeff wrote a post about true lifestreaming. I would say this qualifies. One could argue that this might be taking a bit extreme in fact. That was my initial thought, until I remembered that people have their husbands videotape them in labor and giving birth.

I don't care what people say, there is nothing beautiful about giving birth, so I discovered in health class. So if you want to document your process of creating a life, do it via Twitter, not via camcorder. Using TwitPic as a loophole to get around my request is also frowned upon.

Don't ask me to explain why I am now following @ginnycase, curiosity has gotten the best of me.

Godspeed.

Good Job Phelps

will posted 08/16/08 @ 11:19PM EST

Well, he did it; 8 gold medals in one Olympics. Beat his old, pathetic record of 6 golds, and Spitz's olympic record of 7 golds. For some reason NBC chose not to stream this event online, so I was watching Table Tennis (Hong Kong vs. Korea). Intense, but probably not as much as that last momentous race. How did I find out? I was watching the Twitter search results for keyword 'Phelps' and suddenly it blew up, as you can see below.

In the last two minutes since I've been writing this, the word Phelps has come up 739 times on Twitter, and I'm sure it will be higher by the time I get to the end of this even. Look forward to seeing the actual race later, so adios for now.

(P.S. 806 now.)

Edit: Had to include this tweet:

Prepare for the Opening Ceremony: Watch it live, and Twitter about it too

will posted 08/08/08 @ 2:19AM EST

Whether or not the Olympics excite you, the opening ceremony should be a good show. The Wikipedia entry talks about who will be performing, and which country's leaders won't be attending (France, England, America). You'll be able to watch the opening ceremony live here. That site should also be streaming the rest of the Olympics live. If that doesn't end up working, or you just want other video sources, Lifehacker gives you some resources.
Edit: Well, apparently this starts in less than 6 hours, at 8:08am EST. Stupid timezones.

If you're into Twitter*, you should participate with the #080808 hash tag. If you aren't sure what hash tags have to do with Twittering, read this. I intend on stealing @rambls' avatar for the day (it's okay, he said I could). In other Twitter Olympics matters @beijingolympic is someone Twittering the games; worth following.

As you can see from Mozilla's twitter, Firefox 3 will be available for download in 3 hours. They're going for a world record for the most downloads in one day.

So far the browser has gotten great reviews, and expect to see my thoughts on it later today.

The download will be available: here.

Techy Tuesday: Twittering from Mars

will posted 06/03/08 @ 3:39PM EST

I've been using Twitter recently. I'm really not sure what the appeal is, but I enjoy it. I came across an article from The Daily Galaxy about how the Phoenix Mars Lander is Twittering from the moon.

Uploaded file

NASA gets major points for this one. Not only for keeping with the times and embracing things like Twitter, but for the brilliance of it. They're not dully writing about how the Phoenix is doing, but they're actually writing from the perspective of the lander. When referring to NASA they talk about them in the 3rd person. Here are two examples:

"I'm sending about 116 Mb of data home each day (over 100 images plus other data), transmitting 128 kbps"

"Sci team is done with today's news briefing. They'll be back on the clock to start the Martian work shift at 9:30pm PDT. Mars time is rough."

Well played NASA, well played.

Testing Phase

will posted 05/12/08 @ 11:55PM EST

11:56PM: randomguy132: I think I've got it!
12:17AM: RFX00: @randomguy132 Are you on the path to being a mad scientist?
12:22AM: randomguy132: @RFX00 Yes, I am. It is complete!
12:24AM: RFX00: Apparently my Twitter audience, with all the visitors to Will and Beyond, has now nearly doubled!

What you see above is what the result of the Will and Beyond liveblogging system is. It starts of with me activating liveblogging via my control panel on Will and Beyond. I then can add Twitter users - from that time on, any updates that users make will be shown on Will and Beyond. I can add users at anytime throughout. Then whenever the event is over I click terminate and the post is finalized, ignoring future twitter updates.

I wanted to have this in place by the time I do the 2nd Annual Great Manhattan Perimeter Walk (last year's is here), which occurs this Saturday, May 17th.

Godspeed.
